About Us
Team 2108, Team Awkward Turtle, came to be in the 2007 FRC season, with the game, "Rack 'n' Roll." For the first three years, Team 2108 was associated with Green Hope High School, in Cary, NC. However, due to our team's openness towards students from other schools, we have since decided to change our affiliation. At the end of the 2009 season, we became Southwest Wake Robotics.
Originally based out of a mentor's garage, the team has come a long way over the last few years. At the end of our first season, one of our sponsors, Qimonda, offered us a room in which we could build our robots. We expanded into an adjoining conference room and Qimonda is where we were based for our second and third seasons. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn, in addition to an ever growing team, we had to leave these quarters, and have now taken up residence in another sponsor's office space, Dashiell. We have been guaranteed a room from Dashiell for at least the next two years.
Over the course of our short existence, Team 2108 has developed a tradition in the naming of our robots. As our first build season drew to a close, we realized that our robot was a little bit over weight. To combat this problem, we replaced almost all of the metal fixtures on our ramps with zip ties. When it came time to giving our robot a name, we affectionately chose to call it, "Zippy T. Turtle," after all of the zip ties used on the robot. As we have approached our second and third FRC seasons, we have continued this tradition, having produced, "Zippy T. 2" and "Zippy 3."
Team Awkward Turtle has won several awards in its short history. In our rookie season, we attended the NASA/VCU Regional, where we took both first place and the Rookie Inspiration Award. We also earned an invitation to the FRC Championship where we learned a lot! At the end of our second year, we once again attended the NASA/VCU Regional, where we were able to take second place.
We continue to grow and change as a team but our proud tradition makes us a possible winner in any competition. We look forward to working with and competing against all of the other FIRST Robotics Competition teams on the road to the FRC Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, April 15 - April 17, 2010.
