Team Awkward Turtle places 22nd at VCU

Our robot, Zed 4, placed 22nd at the Virginia Regional (formerly NASA/VCU). We took a fairly good beating in round 1 from one of the best robots at VCU, Team 1676 (The Pascack PI-oneers), and held our own. They cracked the wood under our bumpers and bent some of the aluminum on our robot (under the wood) but we held fast. We are improving our robot for the NC Regional next week. We look forward to seeing all of you at Dorton Arena. If you can find video of our first VCU match, it is a classic.

The Turtle Times

The Team Awkward Turtle publishes a team newspaper just about every week. This newspaper is sent to all of our students, parents, and mentors. The goal of the paper is to keep everyone informed of what is happening with the team. You can find contests and other team profiles there as well.

What is Team Awkward Turtle?

Team Awkward Turtle is a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team. The team is composed of high-school students who form 14 sub-teams:
  • Animation - Our animated videos are designed to educate FRC team members on safety and this year's competition topic.
  • Business - In addition to promoting Team Awkward Turtle to would be sponsors, this team manages the budget with priorities and fiscal responsibility. This team works heavily with our nonprofit booster club, Southwest Wake County Robotics Booster Club.
  • Drive - The drive team is a very popular team whose members are rewarded for their hard work during the year. We drive the robot!
  • Electrical - The electrical team wires the robot and chooses the electrical parts for the robot.
  • Imagery - Our team has never focused on imagery before but this year marks a change in attitude. Expect a really decked out turtle pit!
  • IT - Team Awkward Turtle runs on computers and we keep the computers running.
  • Mechanical - The mechanical team designs and builds the robot using SolidWorks and professional grade power tools.
  • Media - Local media is always interested in what a team of young entrepreneurs is doing. We keep them informed.
  • Outreach - There are many other teams that need our help. Outreach helps these teams through training and other resources.
  • Programming - A robot without programming is a large door stop.
  • Safety - We keep the team injury free. You don't touch anything without taking our training.
  • Scouting - Our scouting team takes care of feeding the team with the information that they need.
  • Spirit - Team spirit helps us keep going when the going gets tough.
  • Strategy - Every season starts with a new and exciting strategy. We work all through the season to refine the strategy that shapes the robot.

Team Awkward Turtle is a lot like a small company. We produce animation videos, write grant proposals, scout and form diplomatic liaisons with our competitors, and of course, build the cool robots!
